The Lagos State Governor, Akinwumi Ambode, has directed that all taxes must be paid electronically with effect from March 1. 

Ambode gave the directive yesterday while flagging off the state’s electronic payment model at the Guarantee Trust Bank branch on Allen Avenue, Ikeja, where he had earlier paid for his own Land Use charge. 

Ambode said, “What we are doing here today is to back our talk with our work. The transaction process is now every day, every time and no weekend, and every kobo will be deployed to bring greater comfort to or citizens. So we have decided that from March 1, 2018, no payment of taxes will be made by cash.” 

He said that the state government, in partnership with Interswitch, had put in place all the multi-layer platforms that would be deployed to make the system effective. 

The Divisional Head (Pubic Sector) of GTBank, Sherifat Dawodu, who spoke with City News said, “We are one of the biggest partners of this government in terms of collection of all kind of taxes, from the P.A.Y.E to Withholding Tax and Ground Rent, and what we have done today is to show how we have been pushing this initiative of government by making the platforms available for citizens to be alive to their civic responsibility.”
