For the first time since inception, the performance last Sunday night was competitive. Nine entries of originally composed songs were presented, depicting the beauty of Abuja as a city with no discrimination to tribe, religion or race.
At the occasion, FCT Minister, Senator Bala Mohammed described Abuja as a city waiting to be discovered and unbundled as the theme signifies the meaning of Abuja where everybody is fighting to make the cosmopolitan city danger free.
Also celebrating Abuja as a unity city was an orchestra from Germany with talented Nigerian award winning Opera singer and first prize winner of the 2010 Luciano Pavarotti Award, Omo Bello; A-Star Berkely’s singers will be joined by skilled performers from other countries.
The event, which took place at the Transcorp Hilton, is for the hotel’s management a demonstration of the Hilton Brand’s vision of music and entertainment as catalysts to telling our story of global travel and style.
According to the hotel’s Public Relations Manager, Mr. Shola Adeyemo, “AMEMUSO’s musical genre is as distinctive as entertaining and the Hilton brand stands of distinctive style of hospitality. So it’s a synergy that ultimately benefits the most important factor in our business – the guest.” Adeyemo added that, the hotel identifies fully with AMEMUSO’s crusade of identifying and developing local musical talents and projecting them for the global stage.
Members of the audience were given the opportunity to vote for their favourite acts. The winning songs were, Abuja Unity Song, in first place with the composer receiving N500,000 from Zenith Bank, PLC; Abuja you are so fine was second place while Abuja Land of Unity came third. The winning song has been declared the FCT anthem by the Minister.
With an all-steel-band providing additional entertainment as guests dined and wined at a cocktail reception, guests were pleased about the new and more interactive dimension of the outing. Mary Ibe who was invited by a friend said, “it’s the third time I am attending it and I am happy that there was no monopoly this time around with the presentations. For the first time, I really heard the beauty of the voices that make up the choir.”
Dr. Ikenna Edozie, another guest said, he almost did not believe that Nigerians actually composed each of the songs. “It was almost unbelievable to see all nine composers coming up stage as Nigerians. It was exciting to see that both old and young had given it their best shot.”
