Amike told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos that Egbunike must be given the full mandate by the AFN and the National Sports Commission (NSC) to succeed on the job.

He stressed that once the job schedule has been clearly spelt out, Egbunike would be spurred to take the London Olympic -bound track and field team to the next level.

“As far as am concerned, Egbunike as the coach is just a paper figure, working without a precise mandate.

“It’s terrible; I think the NSC has to call him and tell him what his position is and provide him with the needed logistics to perform his duties,’’ the former Olympian said.

Amike, however, commended the steps taken by the NSC to prepare the track and field team, through the types of competition the team was being exposed to; to sharpen their competitive edge.

The former Olympian who ranked eighth in the Men’s 400 metres Hurdles event at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, was categorical in declining to rate the country’s chances at the London Games.

“Wel,l I don’t predict championships, because anything can happen, so many things can happen and as an athlete, you can take advantage of such situations,’’ he said.

“I don’t think the men’s 4×400 men was at any time touted as a medal hopeful at the Games, if they are just going for qualification at the last minute, their chances of winning a medal is slim,’’Amike said. (NAN)
