The Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC) has said it always serves demolition notices prior to demolition of any illegal structures in the Federal Capital Territory.
This was stated by Deputy Director, Information and Head of AMMC Public Relations, Mrs. Grace Zamani to clarify misconception on recent removal of illegal structures in Abuja by men of the Department of Development Control, a department under the AMMC.
Mrs. Zamani explained that the affected business premises had long been served notice of demolition. She said that the 24 hrs notice served on them, precisely on 5th September, 2016 is a final notice that precedes actual removal. Their claim of short notice has always been their excuse each time demolition is carried out by the council.
“The problem is, we have sadly observed that, overtime people do not heed to such government directives any longer, probably because we now give them ample time in order not to be seen not to have a human face. They tend to take us for granted”, she said.
She recalled that the “Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) and others had, in the past four months, embarked on massive sensitization campaign, meeting owners of illegal structures and slums face-to-face, urging them to remove such structures because they seriously deface the city. Gladly, most of you were part of that campaign which was given wide coverage, and I expect our law abiding residents to simply obey the laws.”
Accordingly, the current FCT Administration under Malam Muhammad Musa Bello is poised to “deal with violations to the Abuja Master Plan”, remove and prevent emergence of slums, as well as all ‘’ buildings on sewer lines, green area and areas of public interest.”
