The Acting Coordinator of Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC) , Hajiya Safiya Umar, has called on professional bodies in the construction industry to address the issue of quacks with a view to tackling the incessant building collapse in the country.
Hajiya Safiya Umar stated this when members of Nigeria Institute of Buildings (NIOB) paid the management of AMMC a courtesy visit.
She said that despite the establishment of National Building Code (NBC) aimed at regulating the building sector a lot of developers flaunt the Code.
She expressed the Council’s readiness to partner with professional bodies like NIOB to ensure that quality construction projects are executed in the FCT.
The acting coordinator urged professional bodies to end the unhealthy rivalries among various bodies which she said hampers service delivery.
The Acting Coordinator tasked the builders to address the issue of sub-standard construction that may lead to building collapse, even as she charged the body to sanction any erring members, as the move will help to sanitize the profession.
Earlier in his remarks, the President of Nigeria Institute of Buildings, Bdr. Tijjani Shuiabu said the visit was aimed at collaborating with AMMC for speedy development of the territory.
Shuiabu charged the management team of AMMC to have the database of artisans, as he identified artisans as important component in the building industry, while assuring that the issue of quacks would be addressed.
