Amokachi’s dad speaks…‘How my son was murdered’

Ikulechi Amokachi, father of former Super Eagles ace footballer, Daniel Amokachi is visibly troubled. In his mid-80s, he carries himself with effort. He walked with the aid of a walking stick into the sitting room of his residence in Kaduna, to honour the request for an interview with Weekly Trust. He had watched 23-year-old Ayuba, the boy who he said has been with him right from childhood, dying but could not do much for him.

Pa Amokachi, while narrating the story, said when they heard the sound of the gun in front of the house, his wife quickly rushed to see what happened. On reaching the gate, he said, she started screaming. “I struggled with the aid of my walking stick to the gate and saw Terkimbi struggling to enter the compound. He was apparently losing so much blood.”

Pa Amokachi spoke of his late son: “He learned carpentry for three years. He then told me that since work doesn’t come regularly, he will open a kiosk in front of the house where he can be selling recharge card and I gave him my blessing. And he has been selling recharge cards until armed men came around after 10pm and shot him. We heard gunshot thinking it was a knockout. My wife came out and shouted from the gate that they have killed Terkimbi. Before he could reach the gate, he fell down.”

According to Pa Amokachi, “Police came and we went to a nearby hospital; they said we should go to a hospital in the army barracks. After waiting to hear how the treatment is going, the doctor told us to go home. I asked if something happened, but he said nothing. My wife was crying and later told me just before dawn of the next day that my son was dead. We don’t know those who did it but the police have arrested three people who are currently at the Criminal Investigation Department, Anti-robbery section of the Kaduna State Police Command. A boy told the police that those who were arrested have had a quarrel with my son and one of them came to where my boy was selling 10 minutes before the incident.”

“One of them escaped at first but they arrested the two. However, the following day, the other one was arrested. My daughter called them to know what was going on but the police said she should go and meet the DPO. They also went to MTN office to know the number that called before he was shot but MTN said they will only do that with the instruction of the police. We are waiting for the police because it is their duty to investigate the case. We have not heard anything up till now. My daughter went there and the police said she should not come again, that they will tell us everything after they have finished with their investigation.”
