Health minister Isaac Adewole is to officially introduce on Thursday two drugs for treating childhood diseases to its list of approved medicines.
The revised Essential Medicines List will include amoxicillin dispersible tablets for treating pneumonia and zinc low-osmolarity oral rehydration solution for treating diarrhoea.
Both drugs were officially introduced last June, and including them in the EML means they are part of medicines required to be stocked at health facilities nationwide.
An arm of the Partnership for Advocacy for Child, Family and Adolescent Health, led by the Pharmacists Society of Nigeria, has been pushing since 2015 for adoption of both medications to combat both pneumonia and diarrhoea, which together kill thousands of children aged under five annually.
The ministry will also launch the revised National Standard Treatment Guidelines.
