AMVCA: ‘93 days,’ ‘76,’ ‘Oloibiri’ lead nominations

Nigerian flicks, ‘93 days,’ ‘76’ and ‘Oloibiri,’ among others have emerged with multiple nominations in various categories of the 2017 African Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCAs) billed to hold in Lagos.

A Nigerian actress and TV presenter, Mitchelle Dede and Kenyan actor, radio presenter and TV host, Fareed Khimani announced the list of nominees at a live telecast in Lagos.

In all of the 25 categories announced, ‘93 days,’ a film that mirrored the scourge of ebola virus pandemic in Nigeria and the heroic efforts of doctors and nurses of First Consultant Hospital, Lagos bagged 13 nominations. The nominations cut across categories for individual performances and the movie as a whole.

Another Nigerian historical film, ‘76’ also got 12 nods. The film captured events that transpired in Nigeria 40 years ago, documenting pre, during and aftermath of the bloody coup that claimed the life of former Head of State, Gen. Murtala Muhammed.

Similarly, ‘Oloibiri,’ a Nigerian film replicating the challenges associated with oil being dredged in Niger Delta region, leading to environmental degradation and abandonment of the host community of ‘Oloibiri’ (the first host community where oil was discovered in Nigeria), among others, secured 10 nominations across categories.

Other films such as ‘Ghana Must Go’ and ‘A Trip to Jamaica’ produced by popular comedian, Ayo Makun otherwise known as ‘AY’ also secured six and five nominations, respectively.

Organisers said the 2017 AMVCA awards which is the 5th edition, is witnessing tremendous improvement with over 3000 applications submitted.
