Dr. Agada, who is also President, Association of Nigerian Authors was presented the award by the council for legal education, Nigerian Law School Students’ Representative Council in his office recently.

The students who were led by their chairman, Mr. Iyala Henry, noted that Dr. Agada has, through his writings and several campaigns, promoted the reading culture and commended him for his role as an academic of distinction.

“Owing to his tendencies and proclivity in promoting reading culture, we deemed it fit and wise to honour him in his capacity for him to continue the good work he is doing for all Nigerians,” the president said.

He added that the read campaign Dr. Agada initiated in his capacity as minister of education has contributed to the intellectual development of the country as because of it “a lot of our youths have seen reason to open the pages of books and gain knowledge.”

Responding, Dr. Agada said he was honoured by the recognition which he said came as a surprise. He thanked the delegation for singling him out for the award and expressed his determination to continue promoting the reading culture through the Association of Nigerian Authors.

“One  of our primary objective in ANA is to encourage reading,” he said.

He said the poor reading culture in the country no doubt contributed to the massive failure in the recent NECO exams and urged Nigerians to take up reading seriously as “reading opens everything to you to be able to solve them.”He further urged Nigerian to read in all languages including their native tongues.

He reciprocated the gesture by presenting copies of his books for the students’ library.

In his time as minister of state for education, Dr. Agada flagged off the National action committee on read campaign which brought together prominent Nigerian citizens to encourage the reading culture.
