A group, Igbo National Movement (INM), has said the spate of violence ahead of the November 6, 2021 governorship election in Anambra State is worrisome. 

In a statement yesterday by Coordinator of the group, Anthony Olisa Okolo; Youth Leader, Shawn Eneja; Legal Adviser, Eze Eluche; Media Adviser, Peter Agba Kalu; and Director Mobilization, Onyema Uche, the group challenged the South East governors to “wake up” and live up to their responsibilities.

A few days ago, gunmen killed Dr. Chike Akunyili, the husband of a former Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration (NAFDAC) and minister of Information.

Gunmen had also attacked the convoy of the member representing Nnewi North, Nnewi South and Ekwusigo in the House of Representatives, Chris Azubogo, killing his driver in the process. Many others are reported to have been killed in different circumstances.  

“Given that they (governors) are their state’s chief security officers, one will be spot-on to say that the South East governors are sleeping on duty. Certainly, if their states were their personal homes, they will do so much better to secure lives within them. 

“Having agonisingly observed the insecurity in the South East for so long, it has become apparent that the state’s chief security officers have slept on duty for so long. 

“The recent spate of violence in the South East region, notably in Anambra State over the past few days, is at the same time, a sign of leadership failure, and/or a tell-tale sign of state failure,” the group said.

The group, while lamenting the killing of Dr. Chike Akunyili, among others in Anambra State, said that the spate of killings in Igbo land was capable of spelling doom for the socio-economic wellbeing of the people of South East.
