The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a man suspected to be among the notorious armed robbers terrorising Nnewi axis and environs. He was nabbed with an English made Beretta pistol, Daily Trust gathered.

The suspect, Mr Chiemezie Kenneth Aligu, aged 24, hails from Ebonyi State.

The State Police Command spokesman, SP Haruna Mohammed, in a statement said on 7/12/2020 at about 9 am, there was a distress call that a suspected armed robber had snatched a Honda CUB50 at Okpuno Otolo in Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

He said following the distress call, police operatives attached to Nnewi Area Command and Otolo Division, in conjunction with Egbumuenem vigilante group Otolo, mobilised to the scene and arrested the suspect.

The police spokesman disclosed that one English made Beretta pistol with breech number 941396, one motorcycle and two assorted phones were recovered from the suspect.

However, he said the suspect was beaten to a stupor by a mob before he was rescued by the police and taken to the hospital.

In a related development, on 7/12/2020, a police patrol team attached to Aguata Division received a distress call that two men went to a filling station to refuel an ash-coloured Highlander Jeep but they refused to pay for the fuel and threatened to shoot the attendant.

The suspects, on sighting the police patrol team, fired a shot and tried to escape, but were forced to abandon the jeep which was suspected to have been snatched at gunpoint, he said.

“The vehicle was recovered and after a search, a plate number – KTU-314-EV – was found inside the vehicle. Investigation is ongoing and effort is being intensified to apprehend the fleeing suspects to bring them to justice.

“In view of the foregoing, you are kindly requested to disseminate this message through your medium to enable the owner of the stolen jeep to come and claim his vehicle at Aguata Division or contact the PPRO Anambra State Police Command through GSM no 08060970639,” he stated.
