Police rescue 5 new born babies, 3 other children from child traffickers

Anambra State Police have rescued five new born babies and other three in Oraifite, Ekwusigo local government area of Anambra State.

The command also arrested 10 child trafficking suspects including pregnant women.

There suspects are: Edna Nnadi, 37 years, Ujunwa Nweke, 25years ,Izuchukwu Uba, 24 years and Chinaza Ibeh, 19years.

Others include; Peace Okon Effiong, aged 25years, Gift Collins, ‘f’, aged 20years, Chimkaso Kingsley, ‘f’, aged 25years, Happiness Monday, 18years,Chioma Okonkwo, 25years and,Uchechukwu Nwankwo, aged 18years .

They were arrested on 26/1/2021 at about 7:am,following an intelligence report.

Confirming the rescue and the arrest, Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer PPRO, CSP Haruna Mohammed said police operatives attached to the SIB and Area Command, Oraifite, coordinated by the Area Commander, ACP Afolabi Wilfred, raided the house of one Melvina Uju Uba located opposite Nnamdi Azikiwe Orthopedic Teaching Hospital Oba in Idemili South local government area of the State, and arrested the suspects.

“The place was raided following credible information that some teenage girls were being impregnated and their babies being sold out by human traffickers.

“During the operation, five newly born babies and three other children were rescued.” he said.

According to Mohammed, the rescued children would be handed over to the Ministry of Social Welfare, Children’s and Women’s Affairs for proper care, while efforts are being intensified to apprehend other accomplices in order to bring them to justice.
