The Anambra State Chairman, Nigerian Institute of Town Planners, (TPL) Ulasi Joachin, has advocated for the establishment of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning in the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State.

Ulasi made the request hint when he led members of his executives on a courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Joseph Ahaneku, in Awka, the Anambra State capital.

He said the presence of the department in the institution would further produce professionally trained urban planners competent in handling urban related problems.

He underscored the place of professional urban planners in managing emerging rapid population growth challenges posed by rural-urban migration.

Responding, the Vice Chancellor, Prof.  Ahaneku, said the proposal was long overdue, having been approved by the senate. 

He said the department which might likely take off at  the next academic session under the faculty of Environmental Sciences, would be domiciled in the Department of Architecture.
