The Anambra state government has tasked its youth to venture into agriculture and leverage on existing policies to improve their standards of living.

The Programme Manager, Agricultural Development Programme, Ministry of Agriculture, Mechanization, Processing and Export, Mr Jude Nwankwo told the Daily Trust in Awka that it was developmental for graduates to create zeal for farming than pursue phantom white collar jobs.

He described the present day farming as the easiest and fastest way of making money, in view of the steady improvement in the sector, particularly in the area of mechanised farming.

Nwankwo said farming was no longer for poor persons as it was seen in the past, adding that, “the era of concentration on white collar jobs by the teeming youth is gradually fading away. Agriculture is not only money spinning, but dignifying. You can be farming, yet on corporate attire, as virtually everything is now mechanised.”

The manager said many of the farmers in the state who used to visit the ministry in taxis now owns assorted vehicles, while some of them have moved into their houses. 

“You need to come any day they are having cooperatives meeting. You will be wondering whether the cars are really owned by farmers. I don’t think anyone of them is regretting venturing into agriculture,” he noted.
