The Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) has started its 29th Annual Conference at the ThisDay Dome in Abuja. The four-day event, themed “Advancing Accounting Excellence in a Changing World,” attracted participants from across Nigeria.

Established in 1979 and chartered by Act No. 76 of 1993, ANAN is a professional body dedicated to promoting the highest standards of accounting practice. The annual conference serves as a platform for members to network, share knowledge and discuss the developments in the accounting profession.

Government must collaborate with professional accounting organisations – Tinubu

In his opening address and declaration of the conference open, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu said the insights and best practices to be shared during the conference will undoubtedly contribute to the growth and success of the economy.

The president, who was represented by the Accountant-General of the Federation, Dr (Mrs) Oluwatoyin Madein, FCNA, called for enhanced collaboration between the government and professional accounting bodies in the country.

Madein noted the importance of such partnerships in driving economic growth and development.

“The government must collaborate closely with professional accounting organisations in the country,” she said noting that “This will help them to drive economic growth.”

She added that the benefits of such collaborations are clear, restoring confidence and contributing to building a strong and resilient economy.

The conference and its theme provided a platform for accounting professionals to discuss the evolving landscape of accounting practices and explore opportunities for growth.

Madein highlighted the need for accountants to embrace new fields of knowledge and broaden their horizons beyond traditional accounting roles.

“Directors, know that your influence comes from your profession’s continuing and accurate function.

“Let us use this opportunity to learn from each other, exchange ideas and collectively shape the future of accounting excellence in Nigeria for the overall good of Nigeria,” she added.

Madein called on the conference participants to actively engage in discussions and networking to promote knowledge sharing and best practices.

ANAN president calls accountants to embrace technology

The President and Chairman of Council of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN), Dr James Ekerare Neminebor, FCNA, during the conference urged accounting professionals to embrace technological advancements to enhance transparency, efficiency and decision-making in a rapidly changing world.

In his remark, Dr Neminebor acknowledged the importance of financial transparency, governance and environmental sustainability in today’s economic landscape. He said accountants must be proactive and adaptive in turning economic disruptions into opportunities for optimal development.

“As technology has become a core component of societal existence, harnessing the values of efficiency, innovation and digital tools in financial oversight is critical to enhancing transparency, efficiency and decision-making,” Neminebor stated.

He called on Nigeria to invest in digital infrastructure, develop clear policies for technological adoption and foster collaboration between regulators, industry and innovators.

The conference brought together distinguished resource persons to discuss contemporary issues such as financial transparency, green accounting, regulatory frameworks and innovative technologies in financial oversight.

Neminebor also stressed the need for accountants to integrate environmental sustainability into their financial decisions.

“By adopting Green Accounting practices, we can identify and mitigate environmental risks, optimise resource utilisation, reduce waste and encourage sustainable investments and practices,” he said.

 

Conference a success – ANAN CEO

In his address, the Chief Executive Officer of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN), Dr Kayode Fasua FCNA, hailed the 29th Annual Conference as a resounding success, attributing the achievement to meticulous planning and execution.

Speaking at the conference, Dr Fasua said the theme, “Advancing Accounting Excellence in a Changing World,” was chosen to ensure that ANAN members remain at the forefront of the evolving accounting profession.

“Accountancy is also seen today as a currency discipline. And so we have to advance the excellence in that accounting profession as it changes, so that our members will definitely be at par with whatever is happening in the world, so that we can give our best in the public interest,” he said

He said the conference attracted over 6,000 attendees, the highest in ANAN’s history, featured a variety of sub-themes related to contemporary accounting issues, including green accounting, AI and sustainability accounting.

Dr Fasua thanked all the dignitaries and participants for making this year’s conference colourful.

 

ANAN confers fellowship on Kebbi State governor

Kebbi State Governor, Dr Nasir Idris, has been conferred with an honorary fellowship by the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) in recognition of his contributions to prudent financial management and sustainable development in the state.

The award was presented to the governor’s deputy, Senator Umar Abubakar Tafida, at the association’s 29th Annual Conference.

In his speech, Governor Idris expressed gratitude for the recognition and pledged to continue championing transparent and accountable governance in Kebbi State.

“I accept this fellowship with gratitude, acknowledging the trust and confidence reposed in me by the association,” he said.

“As a governor, I recognise the critical role of accounting in good governance, ensuring transparency, accountability and effective resource allocation,” he added.

Governor Idris also restated his administration’s commitment to fiscal discipline, human capital development, infrastructure investment and economic empowerment. He noted that the honorary fellowship would motivate him to support capacity building for accounting professionals in Kebbi State and contribute to the state’s economic growth and development.

The ANAN council and management recognised Governor Idris’ integrity, achievements, and exemplary performance in the accounting profession, deeming him worthy of the honorary fellowship.

Governor Idris also thanked his team, family and the people of Kebbi State for their unwavering support. He pledged to continue working with all stakeholders towards a brighter future for the state and the nation.
