The Chairman of ANCOPPS in the chapter, Alhaji Umar Bala, made the remark in Kankara, at the end of two-week Inter Secondary Schools Soccer Championship, sponsored by the Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State.
Bala said that inter-school competitions would also encourage unity and integration among students and serve as source of discovering talents to represent states and Nigeria in sporting events.
Prof. Atiku Kurfi, Katsina State Commissioner for Education, urged parents to encourage their children to participate in sports.
Kurfi, who was represented on the occasion by Alhaji Lawal Dutsinma, the Malumfashi Zonal Director of Education, urged other Local Councils and organisations to emulate Kankara by sponsoring sporting activities.
The commissioner assured more government support to school sports in particular and sports in general in Katsina State.
Alhaji Abdulhadi Abdullahi, Chairman Caretaker Committee of Kankara Local Government Council, advised youths in the area to embrace sports, to enhance peace and improve their well being.
“The Sports industry has become a high-profit earning sector that needs to be enhanced for the development of the society,’’ Abdullahi said.
The council chief said the competition was organised to rejuvenate the existing cordial relationship between schools in the old Malumfashi Local Government Area, now comprising Kankara, Kafur and Malunfashi Local Government Areas.
According to him, complete sets of jerseys, balls and other related equipment have been provided for the 24 participating schools.
The chairman called for the provision of sporting facilities in schools in the area, to enhance the development of sports.
Government Day Secondary School, Kankara, defeated Government Day Secondary School, Danrimi-Malumfashi, 5-4 on penalties in the final match.
Similarly, Government Day Secondary School, Yallaraba-Malumfashi, came third after a 2-1 victory over Government Day Secondary School, Kafur. (NAN)
