The Anglican church in Anambra will no longer wed couples in church who haven’t first undergone traditional marriage rites, the Vanguard reports.

Rt Rev Samuel Ezeofor, bishop of Aguata diocese and president of the fifth synod of the diocese, announced the directive at Cathedral of Saint John in Ekwulobia, during a thanksgiving service to mark the end of the first session of the synod.

The Catholic church has long since made traditional marriage rites a requirement before priests are allowed to join couples in Christian wedlock.

The synod has also asked Christians to take active part in the nation’s elections, urging them to get their voters card ahead of the polls next year.
