It was gathered that the leakage, which has polluted the Nembe-Brass River, has stopped fishermen from their daily activities.
Daily Trust gathered that the fishermen from the Atonye Kiri settlement discovered the spillage weekend as they were laying their fishing nets and alerted the surveillance team of the Agip Oil Company.
The team led by one Samuel David, reportedly contacted the chairman of the oil and gas committee of the Nembe Kingdom, Chief Nengi James.
Chief Nengi James, confirmed the report to our correspondent and said the committee has contacted Agip in Brass.
“As the chairman of oil and gas committee I have called the attention of Eni/NAOC personnel in Brass to urgently tackle the issue. Moreso, aquatic life and the mangroves including the waterway have been polluted.
“It is worrisome that Agip company has been unconcerned about issues of environmental degradation and spillages. They have not been cooperating with communities on clean-ups, compensations and other environmental issues”, Nengi claimed.
