A member of the House of Representatives from Kano Municipal Federal Constituency, Hon. Engr. Sagir Ibrahim Koki, has formally resigned his membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing the deepening leadership crisis within the party.

In a letter dated November 11, 2025, and addressed to the Ward Chairperson of Zaitawa Ward in Kano Municipal Local Government Area, Koki said his decision was taken in line with his constitutional right to freedom of association.

“By virtue of the right conferred upon me by Section 40 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999 as amended), Article 7.1 of the NNPP Constitution and other relevant laws, I hereby resign my membership of the NNPP effective Tuesday, November 11, 2025,” the lawmaker wrote.

He explained that the lingering internal crisis in the party’s national leadership had made it “difficult, if not impossible,” for him to continue discharging his duties effectively and to provide quality representation to the people of Kano Municipal in the National Assembly.

“My decision to exit the NNPP becomes necessary because the internal crisis in the party leadership at the centre has made it difficult for me to continue discharging my duties and provide my people, the good people of Kano Municipal, with the desired representation,” he stated.

Koki, who was elected under the NNPP platform during the 2023 general elections, expressed appreciation to the party for the opportunity to serve, saying the support and trust he enjoyed from members had been invaluable.

“I thank the party most sincerely for the opportunity accorded me to serve under its platform. The support, trust and experience I have gained during my reign as a member have been invaluable, and I remain deeply grateful to the leadership and members of the party at all levels,” he added.

As of the time of filing this report, Hon. Koki had not disclosed his next political move or the party he intends to join.

Abdulmumin Jibrin, also a rep from Kano, who dumped NNPP two months ago, defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the weekend.
