Brigadier General John Sura (rtd), a political confidant of Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, has become the latest of his allies to dump the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), alleging neglect and betrayal by the governor.

The retired military officer, who hails from the same constituency as the governor, announced his resignation from the party after what he described as repeated disregard for his contributions and advice, despite his loyalty and sacrifices during the 2023 elections.

Sura, who contested the PDP governorship primary in the last election, said he worked tirelessly as Director of Security during the 2023 polls out of loyalty to the party and Mutfwang.

He said that despite risking his life, travelling long distances at night during the elections, Mutfwang neither called him nor responded to his messages. Sura added that even when he reached out to the governor during community attacks to offer advice, his calls were ignored.

“We’ve been friends since our days at the University of Jos. That was why I expected us to be close. But I was surprised at how he treated me,” he added.

Reacting to Sura’s claims, Plateau State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Joys Ramnap, said the governor holds the retired general in high esteem, given their long-standing relationship.

She dismissed his allegations, pointing out that the government had invested heavily in Operation Rainbow, the state’s community security outfit, contrary to Sura’s claim that nothing was being done.

“The government regards state police as an outfit complementing the efforts of conventional security forces. Since coming on board, the governor has revitalised Operation Rainbow by recruiting about 600 personnel, providing vehicles and improving its information centre. For him to say nothing has been done, and to use that as the basis of his defection, is simply not correct,” she said.

Also reacting, Plateau Central Zonal Chairman of the PDP, Monday Daspan, said Sura had no justification for dumping the party, even though every member has the right to leave and return at will.
