Our correspondents report that the female suicide bomber believed to be 14 years old went to the area where hundreds of students of the institution were checking the NYSC mobilisation list and detonated the explosive in her around 2.30pm.
The institution had pasted the mobilisation list yesterday (Wednesday) morning for students who had completed their Higher National Diploma (HND) programme to check their postings. The list was pasted at the central administration of the Kano polytechnic along BUK road.
“I was checking the list when the explosion occurred and my leg was pierced,” one of the students said.
A woman who worked at the institution said she saw the remains of the suicide bomber before it was evacuated by the security operatives.
“Her head was intact and from it I observed that she newly plated her hair and she did a fine make-up before embarking on the suicide mission. She was a very young girl,” the woman said.
Speaking at the scene of the blast, the Kano state police commissioner, Adenerele Tasheed Shinaba said three persons including the suicide bomber were killed and that seven others were injured.
The corpses and the injured have been taken to the hospital.
The police commissioner called on the general public to continue to be vigilant in order to contain the trend of using female girls for suicide bombing.
“She has no business there because she is just a teen and the students who are mainly graduates should have asked her what she was doing there before the explosion,” he said.
At the Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital in Kano, our correspondents counted a total of 21 persons at the main male ward with various degrees of injuries sustained from the blast.
Sources at the hospital said only two corpses were deposited at the morgue by the security and that their identities are still unknown.
Our correspondents saw many parents at the hospital trying to find their children who had gone to the school to check the NYSC list.
Reacting to the blast, the Kano state governor, Engineer Rabiu Kwankwaso yesterday condemned the attack urging the people of the state to be more vigilant.
Speaking through his media aide, Halilu Ibrahim Danitye, the governor pledged to shoulder the medical bills of all the victims.
Meanwhile, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) yesterday said a total of 21 persons were killed in five blasts recorded in the state between last Thursday and Monday.
The North West zonal coordinator of NEMA, Alhaji Musa Illelah who went round various hospitals in Kano said in all 39 persons were injured.
Our correspondents report that from last Thursday to yesterday Kano state has witnessed six cases of explosions with five reportedly carried out by female suicide bombers.
