The Sagamu community in Ogun State and the family of former World Heavyweight Boxing Champion, Anthony Joshua, were thrown into shock following news of a fatal crash involving the boxing icon on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, his uncle said on Tuesday.

Daily Trust had reported that Joshua was involved in a road accident, which claimed two lives on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Monday.

Our correspondent gathered that the vehicle carrying Joshua, a Lexus SUV marked KRD 850 HN, collided with a stationary truck on the highway.

It was further gathered that Joshua, who sat in the rear of the vehicle, sustained minor injuries.

Joshua, who is currently being treated in a specialised medical facility in Lagos, hails from Sagamu in Sagamu LGA of Ogun State.

Speaking with journalists on Tuesday at the family house in Ijokun, Sagamu, Joshua’s uncle, Adedamola Joshua, described the incident as a “rude shock” that left both the family and the entire community in shock.

He said, “The whole community is still in shock. Nobody ever imagined that something this terrible could happen to our son, especially during this festive period when families are meant to come together and rejoice.”

While expressing gratitude to God for sparing Joshua and the driver involved in the crash, the family lamented the tragic loss of two close friends and trainers of the boxer who died in the accident.
