The Ife Council of Elders has endorsed former lawmaker, Rotimi Makinde, for a return to the House of Representatives under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The endorsement was announced during a gathering of the council in Ile-Ife, where the elders expressed confidence in Makinde’s track record and longstanding ties to the community.

Speaking on behalf of the council, Prince Adeleke Adewoyin, a former deputy governor of Osun State, described Makinde as a trusted and tested political figure who has remained consistent within the party.

“You have been very consistent and have passed through a lot in this party. You are the person we know,” the elders said, voicing collective support for his candidacy.

However, the endorsement was accompanied by concerns about whether their support would ultimately influence the outcome of the electoral process.

“We just pray our voices shall matter in this game of who represents us,” the council noted, hinting at apprehension over internal party decisions and broader electoral dynamics.

The elders criticised what they described as a pattern of candidates emerging during election periods without sustained engagement with the community, contrasting such figures with Makinde’s longstanding presence and contributions in Ile-Ife and surrounding areas.

They highlighted his past efforts in community development, including support for local infrastructure and social initiatives, and praised his accessibility to residents.

According to the council, the Ife Federal Constituency requires experienced representation and should not be left in the hands of unfamiliar or untested candidates.

“National Assembly is a familiar route for you. We are familiar with your records; it can only get better,” the elders said.

Prince Adewoyin added that the constituency would not “gamble with its future,” stressing that Makinde had proven his reliability over time.

The council concluded by reiterating its position in clear terms: “If our votes would count, then let them count for the man we know.”

The endorsement signals growing political activity ahead of future elections, as stakeholders within the APC continue consultations over potential candidates for legislative positions.
