There are strong indications that the FCT chapter of the ruling APC may adopt direct primary election for both chairmanship and councillorship elections slated for March, 2019.
A member of the party’s state executive confided in our reporter yesterday that the idea to adopt direct primary was conceived by some party stalwarts who were impressed with the same mode of primary for the National Assembly in the FCT.
He said some of the party’s stalwarts and some chairmanship aspirants across the six area councils met with some state executives of the party to sell the idea to them.
He said some of the aspirants and party stalwarts felt going for direct primary might provide a level-playing field for all the aspirants since indirect primary would clearly favour incumbent chairmen who were seeking for second term in office.
When contacted, the spokesperson of the FCT APC, Engr. Adaji Usman, said the decision to adopt either direct or indirect primaries for both chairmanship and councillorship in next years’ elections lay in the hands of the party’s national working committee.
“Between now and probably next week, anything can happen. If the party at the national level wishes that indirect primary should be adopted or direct, we are prepared for both,” he said.
