The Plateau State chapters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have engaged in a heated exchange over the worsening security situation in the state.
This followed the recent killing of seven miners in Kuru community, Jos South Local Government Area.
The disagreement was sparked by a statement issued by the PDP State Publicity Secretary, Choji Dalyop, who condemned the attack and described it as a tragic loss of innocent lives.
The PDP accused the state government of failing in its primary responsibility of protecting citizens, warning that persistent violence was eroding public trust and posing a serious threat to democracy in Plateau State.
Dalyop said mere rhetoric and routine condemnations were no longer sufficient, stressing that citizens demanded concrete action, justice for victims, and a government that places the sanctity of human life above political considerations.
He added that the PDP stood in solidarity with the families of the slain miners and the affected communities, while urging national and international stakeholders to closely monitor the resurgence of insecurity and alleged human rights abuses in the state.
However, the Plateau APC dismissed the PDP’s comments as ill-motivated. In a statement, the party’s spokesperson, Shittu Bamaiyi, described the opposition’s remarks as being in “bad taste” and accused the PDP of resorting to blackmail rather than offering constructive criticism.
Bamaiyi questioned the sincerity of the PDP’s concern, noting that the statement came shortly after Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s defection from the PDP to the APC.
He argued that the PDP had previously praised the governor’s handling of security issues and only began to criticise him after his political realignment.
The APC said no amount of misinformation or political pressure would reverse what it described as the governor’s popular decision, insisting that the current administration remains committed to restoring peace and safeguarding lives across Plateau State.
