There were massive turnout across the 105 wards in Bayelsa State as party members elected candidates that will represent the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the general elections.

At Sampou/Kalama Ward 6 in Kolokuma/Opokuma local government area, where Governor Douye Diri voted, the incumbent house of representatives member, Hon. Oforji Oboku, polled 2,565 votes to win the APC ticket.

Chairman of the National Assembly Primaries Electoral Panel, Chief Solomon Ogba, had earlier disclosed that the party adopted direct primaries in the state to select its candidates for the National Assembly primaries.

He also pledged to conduct a fair and transparent direct primary elections.

Ogba noted that all relevant institutions involved in election conduct were present, adding that all sensitive and non-sensitive materials had been distributed to polling areas across the state.

He said: “The APC in Bayelsa State has decided to rely on Section 84, Subsection 2 of the Electoral Act 2026, which provides for direct primaries for this exercise.

“We have painstakingly selected people we believe will discharge this responsibility fairly,” Ogba stated.

He added that persons of proven integrity had been selected to conduct the polls in all wards and federal constituencies.

Ogba assured stakeholders that the primaries would be conducted transparently and called on party members and the public to support the process.

He also commended the Bayelsa State Government, residents, and the APC for creating a peaceful atmosphere for the exercise.

Speaking shortly after the exercise in his ward, Governor Diri expressed satisfaction with reports from other constituencies, noting that the peaceful and orderly conduct of the primary in the ward was consistent with developments across the state.

He said: “In Bayelsa, we have been able to bring the APC together, and we are acting as one family. What you have witnessed is being replicated across the other four federal constituencies in the state. The leadership of the party has worked tirelessly to ensure unity, avoid division, and position the party for success in the forthcoming general election.

“There is only one aspirant, and that aspirant is the incumbent legislator representing Yenagoa/Kolokuma/Opokuma Federal Constituency. This is clearly an endorsement of his aspirations. The turnout witnessed here reflected the overwhelming support for Oboku,” he said.

The APC Returning Officer for the ward, Hon. Fortune Panebi, after the exercise, announced that out of the 3,411 registered members of the party in the ward, 2,565 members voted and unanimously endorsed Oboku.
