The All Progressives Congress (APC) has further consolidated its majority in the House of Representatives, raising its membership strength to 246 following the defection of two lawmakers from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) on Thursday.
The defectors, Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin (Bebeji/Kiru Federal Constituency) and Hon. Sagir Koki (Kano Municipal), formally announced their defection in separate letters read by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, during plenary.
Their defection came barely 24 hours after Hon. Daniel Amos, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member from Kaduna State, also crossed over to the APC.
Both Jibrin and Koki cited irreconcilable internal crises within the NNPP in Kano State as the reason for their decision, adding that the division had crippled the party’s structure and made it difficult to pursue their legislative agenda effectively.
With their defection, the APC now commands 246 seats in the 360-member Green Chamber, while the PDP’s strength has dropped to 71.
The Labour Party (LP) holds 21 seats, the NNPP now has 13, APGA retains 5, SDP and ADC have 2 and 1 members respectively, while the YPP holds one seat.
Thursday’s defection was witnessed by prominent APC leaders, including the National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda; former Kano State governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje; Deputy Senate President, Barau I. Jibrin; and Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, among others.
Political observers say the latest wave of defections reflects the APC’s growing influence and the deepening cracks within opposition ranks.
