The All Progressives Congress (APC), an amalgam of five opposition political parties was formed in 2013. At its very first outing in 2015, it defeated the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which had been in power for 16 years.
The success of the APC at the polls was not surprising because the thrust of its campaign resonated well with the electorate.

The party recorded more success in the 2019 general elections, winning more states and seats at the National Assembly, thus ending 16 years of political dominance by the PDP.
But rather than consolidate on its strength to provide the needed and critical supportive ambience for the government in office, the party is today challenged by some avoidable self-inflicted internal squabbles, which are threatening its cohesion ahead of the 2023 elections.
The challenges include but not limited to erosion of party discipline, multiple litigations, loss of some key elections and the scheming for 2023 general elections.
This development has kept the party sneezing with the attendant growing loss of confidence amongst the rank and file of its members.
Analysts are of the view that poor leadership to properly guide and guard the success story of the APC is at the very root of the raging tension in the party.
As the party prepares for its national convention, expected to hold before the end of the year to elect new leaders, it must come clean and strive to heal and reconcile all aggrieved members.
Stakeholders must do the needful by electing only candidates who possess the three critical Cs of competence, capacity and character in modern leadership to lead the party.
One of the contenders for the position of the national chairman of the party is Senator Tanko Almakura, a former governor of Nasarawa State, North Central Nigeria.
