The Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) has said that investing in women engineers is not only a strategy but a catalyst to national development.

Engr. Chinyere Nnena Igwegbe, the 19th APWEN President, made the call at the celebration of the 2026 International Women’s Day (IWD) held at the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) auditorium in Abuja.

In her welcome address, she said the theme of the event “Give to Gain: Empower Her, Empower All” reminds us that giving and mentorship has a multiplier effect and opens doors for girls who dare to dream.

She said women who serve, lead, and commit to excellence have broken barriers while navigating a male-dominated industry, therefore investing in women unlocks potential, creates legacies, and creates innovation.

Igwegbe said true leadership is measured by the lives we have lifted hence collective support for women is essential because you can’t embark on the journey of solving complex problems alone.

She said that engineering offers a unique platform for creativity and a tangible way to impact the environment and improve human lives.

The APWEN President said women possess innate characteristics such as problem solving skills, stress management, and home-building abilities that naturally align with engineering principles.

In his remarks, President of Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Engr. Ali Alimasuya Rabiu, represented by NSE Dep. President, Engr. Valerie Aderagba, called for strengthening of collaboration among women, noting that Nigeria has not really done much for women engineers.

 

He therefore called on the private sector and all relevant stakeholders to support women engineers so they can reach the highest level.
