Pax Christi International is a non-profit, non-governmental Catholic peace movement working on a global scale on a wide variety of issues in the fields of human rights, human security, disarmament and demilitarisation, just world order and religion and violent conflict.

The nomination was made last Sunday in Brussels, Belgium, the headquarters of the organization.

A press release from the communications office of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja signed by its Director of Communications, Rev Fr Tor Alumuku stated that Archbishop Onaiyekan was unanimously chosen for the organisation’s 2012 peace award.

The nomination statement lauded Onaiyekan saying, “you have spoken prophetically against religious hatred, sectarian violence and the destruction of places of worship. In the face of powerful oppositional forces, you have appealed for restraint, forgiveness and the building up of peaceful relations between faith communities.”
