Gemade stated this at the recently concluded 24th edition of Archibuilt, an annual exhibition event of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA) that played host to over 80 manufactures and producers of various products and services in the global housing sector.
“Building materials constitute a significant cost in housing delivery at 60% added that it brought no mean benefit to the built environment and the sub sector is too sensitive to be left unattended to by construction professionals in a haphazard manner. On this note, I commend the NIA for the exposition success stories over the years especially that this year’s exhibition is turning out to be a greater success,” he said.
Gemade called on the Nigerian Institute of Architects to conclude work on its building materials policy documents, stating that “the development of a viable building materials market will help the process of national industrial development while facilitating the expansion of local capabilities,” adding that it is a major way to stem the indiscriminate importation of foreign building materials.
“I want to use this opportunity to enjoin all architects and professionals in the built environment to ensure that the building materials which form component of buildings should be used in such a way as to comply with section 10 of the national building code,” he added.
Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Ms Ammal Pepple commended the NIA for its consistency in the annual series, stating that “ARCHIBUILT has continued to serve as platform for wealth creation, generation of ideas, exchange of knowledge while enhancing professional excellence in the built environment.” According to the minister, “the contribution of ARCHIBUILT to the promotion of a more virile and sustainable built environment in Nigeria has therefore been widely acclaimed.”
The Chairman, Senate Committee on Lands, Housing and Urban Development, and Senator Bukar Abba Ibrahim, called on the federal government to increase its allocation of funds to the housing sector, stating that it was inadequate especially considering the urgent need to overcome the deficit.
