Architects Registration Council of Nigeria (ARCON) has called on the federal government to adequately fund the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing to implement its mandate, especially the current government’s proposed affordable housing programmes.
ARCON said in order to achieve this architects and other relevant professionals in the building industry should be used in designing the proposed affordable housing schemes.
This was contained in a communique issued at the end of the 2016 Architect Colloquium’ signed by its Registrar, Arc. Umar Saulawa Murnai  and made available to journalists.
ARCON called for an enabling environment for the development of local manufacturing capacity as well as development of local building materials in Nigeria through policy formulations.
The council said the need to use professionals in the industry became imperative as building collapse in Nigeria has assumed a huge security risk, calling  on building owners, statutory bodies, building contractors and the  public to actively  supervise the construction of their building projects.
It said that over 65% of the buildings produced in the country were carried out by quacks due to inherent corruption in the system, adding that this has led to most of the building failures recorded.
The council stressed that due to the current security situation in the country, the Nigerian architects should enhance security in the built environment through innovative and security conscious designs, saying that security considerations form an integral part of the architectural design process.
