Arguments are a reoccurring thing in every relationship and apologies always come in if we must move past the issues. But ironically, many people believe that apologies are solely for the female gender. How true this is, Womanhood discusses the issues.
An argument broke out last week during a small gathering when a man said over his dead body would he kneel and apologise to his wife even when he was the one on the wrong side.
In his words, even if he was at fault there was no way he was going to apologise to her. “Why should I apologise to a woman? God in his holy books stipulated that the man is above the woman and it should remain like that no matter what. She should be the one apologising even if I am the one who is wrong. Why should I stoop so low to apologize to a woman? That is degrading the authority I have as the man of the house. Apology is meant for females and not the male gender. Quote me anywhere, I stand by my words that men should never stoop so low to apologise to women no matter what, not even for love,” he said.
Amina Musa, 39-year-old consultant says, “Really! What century does he belong to if I may ask? He sure has a lot of issues going on in his life and it needs to be fixed fast. Who on earth still believes that apologies are solely meant for the female gender? With perspectives like his, the society sure has a long way to go in terms of social progress and development. Gone are the days when men boss their way through a woman’s life.”
Jamila Shuaib, 41-year-old lawyer, believes that men who think only women should be apologising have low self-esteem. “Any man that thinks that apologizing is solely for women definitely has an ego and low self esteem issues. Apologising is the way to move forward these days; no one has time for unnecessary arguments. Hey, women are better positioned these days to know when their worth is appreciated or not. With such attitude, he is sure not to have a woman standing by his side when he desperately needs one. I am certain most women would prefer to remain single than have such a man as husband.”
Uchenna Okoli, 40-year-old engineer, explains that “Most men would rather just explain what happened than apologize because they see it as degrading, especially an African man. To be fair, very few men still think like this, most men are educated and enlightened now and know the importance of the magic word ‘I’m sorry’. Most marriages would be saved if only men of such thinking and also women come down from their high horses to apologise. Most times, that’s all that is needed for a relationship to move on and wax stronger. And don’t forget that a man who is quick to apologise earns a lot of respect from his wife and even her relatives and friends.”
