The First African UNESCO Laureate, Prof Sir Bashiru Aremu, has congratulated the management of Minaret University, Ikirun, Osun State, and the global Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat following the approval of academic activities by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

The NUC’s letter, dated November 4, 2025, authorised the formal commencement of academic programmes at the faith-based institution — the first conventional university founded by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community worldwide.

 

In a statement on Monday, Aremu, who also serves as the pioneer Dean of the Faculty of Science and Computing at the university, described the approval as a “historic milestone” for both the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community and Nigeria’s higher education system.

 

Minaret University, located in Ikirun, offers undergraduate programmes across two faculties — Science and Computing; and Management and Social Sciences.

 

Departments under the faculties include Computer Science, Cyber Security, Data Science, Accounting, Business Administration, and Logistics and Supply Chain Management.

 

The institution’s mission is to nurture morally upright and entrepreneurial graduates through research, innovation, and community service.

 

Aremu, an internationally acclaimed scholar in computer science and information technology, was recently honoured by UNESCO’s Central and South America Centre for his contributions to education and intellectual innovation.

 

He currently serves as Chairman of the World Accreditation Commission (USA), Chief Patron of the Unity of Nations Action for Climate Change Council (UNACCC), and Board Chairman of several universities across Africa.

 

According to him, the establishment of Minaret University represents “a beacon of faith-based education and intellectual excellence that will shape future leaders in Africa and beyond.”
