Managing Director of Arewa Cotton, Mr Anibe Achimugu, revealed this in a statement he issued, adding that the partnership with COMPACI was aimed at improving production in the North-central and South-west zones of the country.
He said that emphasis will be placed on provision of  well-tailored extension services to producers.
Achimugu said female farmers, as a major focal point in cotton production, will be encouraged and trained to increase their productivity and contributions to farming in general, saying: “This planned partnership has led to the very first visit of COMPACI to Nigeria from the 9th to 14th of December 2014.”
COMPACI, founded in 2008 to support smallholder farmers all over Sub-Saharan Africa to increase their cotton productivity and improve the living conditions of farmers in the region, was led on the visit to Nigeria by Mr Ben Sekamatte.
The statement read in part: “So far, close to 700,000 farmers spread over 13 African countries have contracts with cotton companies under the COMPACI project. More than 300,000 cotton producers participated in trainings for agricultural best practices to increase their yield and to cultivate cotton in a more sustainable way.”
