A Kano based Hausa speaking radio station, Arewa Radio, yesterday staged its maiden marathon tagged ‘Arewa Youth Marathon’ for youths resident in Kano.

The marathon which covered 11 Kilometres starting from Kano Emir’s palace to Bayero University New Campus is aimed at encouraging youths to participate in sporting activities.

Speaking to Daily Trust, the coordinator, Binta Abdullahi Fulani said, “The Marathon is organized to promote peace among the youth in the state, by giving them an opportunity to showcase and express themselves through athleticism.

“Arewa Radio has always taken pride in being a News, Talk and Sports station and we intend to give back to the community that has stood by us over these years.

“We have provided consolation prizes that will motivate our youths to engage themselves more in sporting activities as well as focus more on self development.

“Kano state is blessed with a vibrant youthful population and most of them engage in football, neglecting other sporting activities. This is despite the potential and opportunities in other sports. So, we wanted to put Kano state out there and on the radar of states that encourage and promote sports among the youths.

“The first edition is successful to a large extent and the subsequent ones will be even better God willing.”

While Muddasir Yahaya emerged the overall winner of the race, Lawan Musa Idris, placed second.
