Armed robbers kill LASU undergraduate in Lagos attack

A Lagos State University (LASU) undergraduate, Otabor Joseph, has died from gunshot wounds sustained during an armed robbery attack in the Iba area of Lagos.
Joseph, a student of the Department of History and International Studies in the Faculty of Arts, was reportedly attacked alongside some friends by armed robbers on the night of May 29, 2026, in a location outside the university campus.
Sources said the assailants opened fire during the robbery, leaving the student critically injured.
He was rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) for treatment but succumbed to his injuries on June 2.
Confirming the incident, LASU management disclosed that it was alerted shortly after the attack and immediately activated support measures through the Office of the Dean of Students’ Affairs.
According to a statement issued by the Acting Coordinator of the Centre for Information and Public Relations, Olaniyi Jeariogbe, university authorities maintained close contact with medical personnel handling the student’s treatment until his death.
The statement noted that available information indicated that Joseph and his friends were victims of an armed robbery operation carried out off campus.
The Vice-Chancellor of LASU, Prof. Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, expressed condolences to the deceased’s family, friends and colleagues, describing the incident as painful and tragic.
As of the time of filing this report, there was no official confirmation from the police regarding arrests or ongoing investigations into the attack.
