Army opens fresh court-martial for mutiny

Nigerian Army today opened fresh court martial of some 97 soldiers from the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army in Maiduguri, Borno State on charges of mutiny.


The court martial at the Army Headquarters Garrison, Mogadishu Cantonment in Asokoro continues efforts by the Army to promptly dispose off cases pertaining to:

  • violation of the Armed Forces Act,
  • disregard to service discipline,
  • other unprofessional conducts

The army is particular about trying offenders in the “ongoing military operations in the North-East,” said army spokesman Brigadier General Olajide Laleye.


On September 15, a previous court martial headed by Brig Gen Chukwuemeka Okonkwo sentenced 12 out of 18 soldiers on trial for mutinying against the former 7 Div GOC, Maj-Gen Ahmed Mohammed.
