The Nigerian military on Sunday said it has recaptured Chibok town from the Boko Haram insurgents.

Last Thursday, the insurgents took over the town which is famous for the capture of over 200 schools girls by the militants in April 2014.

Army spokesman Brigadier- General Olajide Olaleye confirmed to Daily Trust in a text message that “troops recaptured Chibok 1830 hours (6:30pm) last night (Saturday) and mopping ops ongoing. The town is now secured.”

Chairman of Chibok Community in Abuja, Sambido Hosea Bana had told Daily Trust on Friday that the insurgents over ran Chibok on Thursday after fleeing from Vigilantes’ attack in Mubi.

He had said the militants captured seven Chibok villagers who had gone to Askira to make phone calls.

Several inhabitants said the army had fled the assault, leaving the vigilantes to fight on their own, according to AFP reports.

Control of Chibok is crucial to the reputation of the army and the government, which have come under harsh criticism for their failure to rescue the schoolgirls.

The Boko Haram members stormed the Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok on the evening of April 14 and forced 276 students onto trucks in a mass abduction that caused global outrage.
