The Nigerian Army says as part of the efforts to tackle accommodation challenges in the barracks and boost operational readiness of troops, authorities in the 6 division of Nigeria Army have started monthly renovation of dilapidated blocks in the division.
The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Emmanuel Emakah, who stated this during the commissioning of Solar Energy Powered Python roundabout and renovation 29 Battalion Copra Bellow Quarter (CBQ) on Tuesday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, said the gesture is in line with the vision of the Chief of Army Staff to ensure the welfare of troops.
He urged the soldiers to be part of maintaining infrastructures at the barracks, as the army authority is working to boost their morals.
He said: “Today we are commissioning the renovated soldiers accommodation which was in a very bad shape but the commanding officer, stepped into renovating it for the comfort of the soldiers in line with the Chief of Army Staff soldiers first mantra and his command philosophy which places so much emphasis on the welfare of soldiers.
“So, that is why this is being done, and it’s not just this, others have been done in the past and we are doing it gradually picking one block per month, or one in two months, so I think with this, it’s a good development for our troops
“The only thing we want to encourage the soldiers is to ensure they maintain it, the Army has done it’s part, so the soldiers should also do their parts by maintaining the infrastructures.” He said.
Speaking earlier, the Commanding Officer 29 Battalion, Nigerian Army, LT Col. I J Otogo, said the renovated copra below quarters will improve troops living conditions, moral and operational readiness through more comfortable and durable environment.
He said that both projects commissioned reflex strong leadership, symbolize discipline, innovation and professionalism within the cantonment.
He said: “The roundabout reconstruction has been long overdue as it has become defaced and below the high standard set by the GOC 6 division, the roundabout now with fully solar powered, enhance safety, aesthetic and environmental sustainability. Ensuring safer movement in poor visibility, it symbolizes discipline, innovation and professionalism within the cantonment.
“The renovated copra below quarters improves troops living conditions, moral and operational readiness through more comfortable and durable environment, both projects reflex strong leadership, commitment to excellence and the collective efforts of officers and men of 29 battalion in upholding the division’s standard.”
