The Nigerian Army has said its troops compelled terrorists to abandon dozens of abducted worshippers following a swift response to an attack on a church in Kaduna State.

In a statement, the Army disclosed that 31 civilians kidnapped during an Easter service at an ECWA Church in Ariko Village, Kachia Local Government Area, were rescued after troops engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle.

According to the statement, the operation was launched after a distress call alerted security forces to the abduction of worshippers during the service. Troops were immediately mobilised to the area and, with the support of local residents, advanced in pursuit of the fleeing terrorists.

“The pressure mounted by the advancing troops forced the terrorists to abandon 31 hostages,” the Army said, adding that one of the rescued victims sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical attention.

However, the Army confirmed that five victims were killed by the attackers, with their remains recovered at the scene.

It added that the fleeing terrorists are believed to have suffered heavy casualties, noting that blood trails were observed along their escape routes.

The military said troops have intensified pursuit operations to track down the attackers and dismantle their enclaves, with efforts ongoing to rescue any remaining captives and bring those responsible to justice.

To strengthen security in the area, additional troops have been deployed to reinforce ongoing operations and prevent further attacks.

Reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and property, the Army urged members of the public to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies, stressing that collective vigilance is key to restoring lasting peace and stability.
