Tagged “Afridrinksfest” according to the chief coordinator of the programme, Segun Ola-Oyedeji, apart from the exhibition that would hold for nine days, there will also be a carnival train on floats that will move from Ikeja through Ikorodu Road, Funso Willians Avenue and into Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos Island.
Each float, according to him, will be decorated in the corporate image and cultural artistic expression of the various sponsors and government of each state of the federation
“The parade of floats will be on the World Tourism day 27th September to make the world appreciate why the motion of the world tourism day celebration was moved by a Nigerian, the late Chief Atigbi, and was endorsed by the United Nations. The second day will be to celebrate our National Day, 1st October with fanfare,” he said
Ola-Oyedeji said Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN) would feature artistes of different genres from the land everyday of the festival ranging from the modern to the traditional. Artistes from Africa and the Diaspora will feature.
“Let us begin to appreciate our traditional arts. Let us appreciates the ingenuity of our forefathers and mothers who conceived these arts. It is necessary for us Africans at this crucial period of our development to assert our cultural identity for positive goal,” he said
The general manager of the National Theatre, Kabir Yusuf, said the essence of the occasion is to create awareness and also to enable residents of Lagos to feel the impact of the celebration of Nigeria at 50
Other programmes to mark the 34th anniversary and October 1, according to him include a night of stars, street gallery made up of planks and drapes to give aesthetic value, film exhibition and National troupe performance.
Yusuf said the theatre has been revamped with all the faulty cinema halls now functioning. He said a 1,500kv capacity generator has been acquired to strengthen the capacity of two 700kv generators.
