Obama may be the first African American to be the chief tenant in the White House, but his heart and soul is unmistakably American – by that I mean that he subscribes to the libertarian philosophy of unbridled freedom even to the extent of endorsing what the holy books specifically outlaw. Following the president’s lead, the US Supreme Court has now legalised same sex marriage. The well-funded LGBT lobby has been in celebration mood ever since. The cheek of it is that they even insist on punishing those who refuse to tow their path of perversion. At the inception of the papacy of Pope Benedict, homosexuals attacked him for saying that their sexual preference was sinful and that they needed prayers. They called the pope a German shepherd. They have neither respect for God’s injunctions nor for the rest of society.
I cannot be described as a religious zealot by any stretch of the imagination. But I hold certain injunctions sacred: like the definition of matrimony as a union between a man and a woman; the prohibition of sodomy; the outlawing of female-on-female ‘sex’; the contradistinction between male and female just as in electrical positive and negative polarities; the subsumption of the rule of man to the will of God. I know that I speak for the overwhelming majority of the people on the African continent. And while we are at it, I challenge any African whose culture tolerates the gay ailment to please drop me a line. I bet there is none!
Obama should not demystify himself by trying to persuade African leaders to repeal anti-gay laws. Let America’s sickness stay within American borders. When Ebola reared its head, Americans did everything possible to keep it out of their borders. Homosexuality, lesbianism, transgender and bisexual statuses are worse than Ebola in African communities. This is not to judge gay people. It is stating it as it is. If you can’t extirpate your virus, don’t spread it to my turf. In Africa, men don’t become pregnant and women don’t climb palm tree.
As President Buhari visits America, he is best advised to stick to his advertised focal points of security, anti-terror war and economic collaboration. If his host dares mention the LGBT issue, Buhari should tell him as nicely as possible that although we are known to subscribe to many American afflictions, this gay madness will be a notable exception because it simply will not fly anywhere in Nigeria. If our parents had been gay, we won’t be here.
It may be politically expedient for Obama to support the gay movement. But those of us who are not encumbered with such political considerations should not be insulted by those playing games with morality and the entire ethical fibre of their own patch of the earth. Majority of Americans are not on the side of Obama on this gay issue. As noted by a US-based Nigerian physician, Dr. Mercy Obamogie, “Banning same sex marriage has nothing to do with human rights violation as the US government and western activists have been trying to argue especially this past week. When God created Adam and Eve, He knew exactly what He was doing and He is still in charge.”
She wonders why America would want to impose its views on the matter on Nigeria and other countries of the world. “The US should not meddle with the internal affairs of Nigeria especially when it comes to passage of laws that affect her citizens. Nigeria is right in banning “same sex marriage” for cultural reasons. Because “same sex marriage” is okay in the US, it does not have to be same in Nigeria and other developing countries.”
Another Nigerian, Ike Willie Nwobu, takes the matter to another dimension with a conspiracy theory of his own: “This threat by the West is another subtle ploy to infiltrate our virile populace with this vile invention, thereby tripling our susceptibility to the pandemic HIV/AIDS and other diseases, another indication of their neo-colonialist tendencies. What is saddening is the fact that they are not satisfied with restricting their spiritual and psychiatric degradation on themselves alone, they have to make virgin Africa a partaker of their woes … Why must they pollute us with their vermin?”
There is no prize for guessing what President Buhari’s reply would be if Mr. Obama over-reaches himself during the imminent state visit by canvassing support for homosexuality. Buhari will politely educate his host that our culture does not permit such perversion. Buhari will tell his host that same-sex marriage is not an issue in Nigeria. Our focus is on security, anti-terror war, and wiping out corruption and poverty from our land. We welcome partnerships, not imposition. Keep your eyes on the ball, PMB!
On this score, Buhari has the support of ALL sane Nigerians, for homosexuality is not considered a matter of choice in Africa but a psychiatric ailment. And this has nothing to do with being judgemental. As I noted in this column on 12th December 2011, “I do not intend to be judgmental about the gay issue. Having read widely about the subject I know there are many intervening variables to be considered when analysing the gay phenomenon.
“What rankles is the attempt by the gay lobby to ram their position down our throat. That is dangerous. Culture is thicker than political correctness. It may be politically correct for President Obama to make pro-gay statements but that won’t make it possible for a Nigerian homosexual to announce in his village that he’s getting married to a fellow man. In Africa, whether you solemnise your marriage in church or have your Nikai in the mosque, there is still the cultural angle of family introductions and bride price. Now which self-respecting Nigerian father is going to give out the hand of his son in marriage to another man?”
