Mohammed Abacha recalled the enormous role of the late Rimi to the growth of democracy not only in Kano State but also the entire country. For the PDP in particular, the governorship aspirant noted that Rimi’s death would be felt for several years to come. He argued, however, that the PDP should see his death as a challenge to be even more united as one political family.
According to Mohammed Abacha, the PDP remains the strongest political party with a wider national spread, which makes it enjoy the appeal and envy of many. He pledged to assist the party in whatever form at any time, explaining that members must make sacrifices to help the PDP confront the immediate challenges of galvanizing the people for change in the efforts to recapture power from the ANPP in Kano State.
On his rumored ambition to contest the governorship seat in 2011, Mohammed Abacha had told the party chairman that in due course, he would publicly and formally announce his decision on the matter. Although he is yet to make such declaration, Mohammed Abacha reassured the PDP chairman of his steadfast loyalty at all times. He maintained that he loves the PDP with a strong conviction.
Overwhelmed by the surprise visit, the Kano State PDP chairman, Barrister Faruk Iya, noted that Mohammed Abacha was the first aspirant to lead a powerful delegation to his office since his election into that party position. He recalled the brotherly assistance Mohammed offered him in his bid to be elected the chairman of the Kano State PDP chapter.
The PDP chairman used the occasion to formally apologize over his previous radio comments in which he alleged that Mohammed Abacha is surrounded by political thugs. Mohammed Abacha, however, believes that the PDP should look forward to the challenges of recapturing power. He believes strongly in politics without bitterness, characterized by forgiveness and reconciliation.
No doubt, Rimi’s death has overshadowed the flurry of political activities in Kano State, but the aspirants are fast resuming their mobilization efforts. Though Mohammed Abacha has not formally declared interest to contest the governorship ticket since he joined the PDP, the pressure on him to do so is rising with exciting intensity. In fact, the pressure is so intense and relentless that Mohammed Abacha may ultimately be compelled to succumb to such spontaneous pressure.
Significantly, the youths of Kano State are rising in full force to campaign for Mohammed Abacha. Many of them see him as the symbol of a brighter future for them at a time of uncertainty, caused by poverty and unemployment. Mohammed Abacha is apparently concerned by the rising wave of crime involving our youth who would otherwise have been engaged in more productive and positive activities if they had the opportunities. It is not surprising, therefore, why the youths are mobilizing support for his gubernatorial ambition.
All around the world, there is increasing emphasis on giving the younger generationa greater opportunity to participate in the leadership process of their countries. In Nigeria, for example, the youths are largely unhappy that their fate is controlled by those who cannot read their pulse, let alone offer sustainable solutions to the challenges facing them.
Indeed, the youths can no longer afford to leave their destinies in the hands of those who have repeatedly failed them. The increasing involvement of youths in the campaign for Mohammed Abacha to contest the governorship election is a reflection of the extent they are determined to carry their destinies in their own hands. These young men of Kano State, who live from hand-to-mouth daily, perceive Mohammed Abacha as a rallying point to change their fortunes.
Why is Mohammed Abacha such a remarkable focus of youth agitation for change? His identification with their cause and immediate needs may largely explain why he is trusted so much by the youths of Kano State.
One of the secrets of Mohammed Abacha’s rising popularity is his philanthropic activities. He never hesitates to assist the youths and others that need a hand of fellowship. In fact, he has donated many sophisticated equipment to public hospitals, including machines that help doctors to carry out operation without opening up the patients. He did this with the conviction that the gesture may go a long way to improve the quality of medical services.
Many of the youths are convinced that Mohammed Abacha has their interest at heart. They are convinced he is motivated by the genuine desire to offer service rather than seeking public office for personal enrichment. The agitation for generational change is a global political reality and Nigeria is no exception.
It is pleasing to note assurances given by the Kano State PDP chairman, Barrister Faruk Iya, who declared that the party will allow transparency in the election of the party’s gubernatorial candidate. Lack of internal democracy by political parties can lead to disenchantment, resulting in rival parties gaining advantages. It is not enough for the PDP to remain united as one family; it must also demonstrate a commitment for a free and fair election. The people’s choice should be allowed to be the party’s choice. Impositions have cost the party in the past and the party should not repeat this mistake.
