This was the view of the chairman of the National Action Committee on the Read Campaign, Alhaji G.Y Bello. He made this assertion at a Round Table organized by the committe to mark the World Book and Copyright Day.

“It has been observed that in some schools, books donated to them are not made accessible to students. The schools keep them locked up in their offices as if they are meant for decoration and bring them out for placement whenever they are expecting inspectors,” Alhaji Bello said. He further called on individuals, schools and organizations to open libraries and make them accessible to all.

Also speaking at the occasion, the Director General, National Copyright Commission, (NCC) Mr. Adebambo Adewopo said the commission is determined to root out piracy in the country and has made 410 arrests since it initiated the Strategic Action Against Piracy (STRAP).

Mr. Adewopo, who was represented by Mr. John Asein, Director National Copyright Initiative (NCC) said piracy is a major threat to intellectual works and has cost the country millions.

He further urged Nigerians not to patronise pirated materials so as to halt the ugly trend.
