Have we ever given a thought to the cost of servicing Aso Rock monthly, ministers’ domestic and official allowances or the multitude of payments to our honourable fellows of the green and red chambers? The figures are just scandalous, and their crucial analyses are enough to give someone cardiac arrest. As long as these offices remain alluring with overblown budget allocations, the monster eating up deep into our national cake, corruption, can never be tamed.

Have we ever pondered what fraction of a population of over 150 million are salary-earners? I can play safe if I say non-salary earners make up about 75-80 per cent of the population in Nigeria, so don’t they (the majority) have any regard, benefit or recognition from the government? Continuous lamenting about the blatant betrayal of trust by our leaders makes the heart bleed and eyes stream with tears.

The only consolation is that Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) has informed us that on the day of judgement, no one approaches the gates of heaven unless he/she gives a full account of his/her earnings. It is not an issue of going over past JAMB or SSCE question papers thereby rehearsing, before the D-day. There’ll be nobody for lobbying or proxies, neither will there be room for media propaganda or blackmail. Only people with genuine and justifiable earnings will once again have a chance of having fresh air. You know, the real kind.
