The Oyo State government last week ordered the immediate closure of all primary and secondary schools following students’ protests over the newly proposed introduction of ‘education initiative’ by government.
Students have accused the government of planning to privatize schools in the initiative.
But Governor Abiola Ajimobi in a statement said government had no intention to privatize, commercialize or cede any of its public secondary schools to any individual or group.
The statement said the intention of the government was to “partner willing stakeholders in the participatory management of a negligible number of the public secondary schools, which may not be more than 10 per cent of the existing 631 schools in the end.”
The government said schools were closed to ensure the safety of students.
