The management of Ashaka Cement has signed a community development agreement with its host communities around Maiganga coal mine in Akko Local Government Area of Gombe State to stop environmental degradation.

Speaking to newsmen after signing the agreement, the company’s Managing Director, Malam Rabiu Umar, said the agreement was in line with the provisions of the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act and Regulation.

He said the agreement entailed commitment of all parties to developing a positive relationship to end the environmental degradation resulted by mining activities in the area.

“AshakaCem’s environmental policy reflects on our commitment to sustainable development and our approach to meeting new challenges in environmental protection.

Fulfilling all statutory and regulatory obligations and exceeding expectations in terms of socio-economic offerings to our partnering communities is an integral part of how AshakaCem runs its business,” he said.

Malam Umar said the company operated with utmost respect for the common interest of the people and supported its host communities by generating economic growth, creating jobs and social support for them.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Chairman of the Maiganga Community Development Association, Mr. Gibar Tsafta, said wide consultations, engagements and negotiations were involved in the process of preparing and finalizing the agreement.

“We have put the interest of all stakeholders into consideration in arriving at this document, and we will remain dedicated to its full implementation for the benefit of all,” he said.

He, however, urged for more support and constructive engagements with the company to engender the necessary conducive environment for continued excellent performance.
