Favour Ashe has qualified to represent Nigeria at the next Commonwealth Games by storming to victory in the 100m final at the national trials in Lagos.

The US-based sprinter ran a personal best of 9.93s to beat the duo of Fakorede Adekalu and Chidera Ezeakor who finished second and third respectively.

The winning time is the fastest time ever to win the 100m sprint on Nigerian soil, and the first time the top two will run a sub-10 seconds race in Nigeria.

Speaking to media at the trials, Ashe reflected on his recent rise to national 100m glory despite a tumultuous journey, with the 24 years old declaring he deserves his victories.

“Despite all what I’ve been through this couple years I still try my best to stay locked in,” he started.

“I’m still showing up in practice, doing what I have to do. That’s why I think I deserve everything going my way right now.”

The newly crowned champion based in Qatar where he undergoes rigorous training and further attributed his form to a rigorous, strict lifestyle change that he plans to carry into international competition where Nigerians should expect a podium finish.

“We should be expecting something good. Like I said, I’ve done one month of discipline and taking that discipline up to two months for now, which is to the commonwealth games.

“That being said I think Nigeria should be expecting medals from me, 100% confident.”

Ashe also credited his inner drive and family for his fierce mental resilience and discipline as he prepares for the Commonwealth Games that will take place in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2.
