The Lagos State Police Command has detained five of its officers, including an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), for their alleged involvement in the assault of a motorist in the state.

Their arrest and subsequent detention followed an order by the State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, over a trending video of the officers allegedly assaulting the driver of a vehicle.

A senior police officer told our correspondent that the incident occurred during a stop-and-search operation, where the officers were checking the motorist’s vehicle documents.

A video of the altercation, which was shared on social media, appears to show one of the officers slapping the motorist.

The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State has condemned the actions of the officers, stating that their behaviour was unacceptable and unprofessional.

The commissioner has ordered the detention of the five officers and promised a thorough investigation into the matter.

The Tactical Squad involved in the incident has been dissolved, and the command has assured the public that disciplinary action will be taken against any officer found guilty of misconduct.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed their arrest and subsequent detention, saying that the action followed a thorough preliminary investigation.

Hundeyin disclosed that, “The officers will face an orderly room trial in line with established disciplinary procedures to ensure justice is served swiftly and transparently.

“In addition, the entire Tactical Squad implicated in this matter has been dissolved with immediate effect.

“A new Tactical Squad has been constituted, comprising officers who will adhere strictly to international best practices in policing.”
